Tutorial

If you're new to Olympia, reading the rules can be a daunting task.  There are many many pages to read, and none of it can be put into practice straight away.  Lots of features require a faction that has been playing for a few turns at least, and some more exotic ones require nobles with access to researchable skills.

So where do you begin?

Right here!

In the following pages, I will guide you through the first few turns of a new faction, named 'House of Atreides'.  This tutorial will cover the very basics: how to form new nobles, how to study skills, etc...

Feel free to cross-reference any order you come across in the rules, and read the description there.

When you're ready to begin, go on with the next section: Initial Turn Report.

Initial Position Report

This is what you've been waiting for.  Your first step into the wide world of Olympia!

Your initial turn report is a first situational report of what your faction starts with.  It will contain your faction information, information about the turn that you're starting on, your initial Noble, etc...

Let's take a look at the Initial Position Report for House of Atreides.  Don't worry if some of what's coming doesn't make sense yet, I'll break this report down into chunks and explain what everything means in the next section.

Initial Position Report - Breakdown

Let's take a closer look at the Initial Position Report:

Olympia G3 turn 1
Initial Position Report for House of Atreides [hu7].
Season "Fierce winds", month 1, in the year 1.

This part gives you some information on the turn.  The season actually has some impact on gameplay, as you will certainly discover at some point.

Welcome to Olympia G3!

This is an initial position report for your new faction.
You are player hu7, "House of Atreides".

The next turn will be turn 2.

Noble points: 18 (0 gained, 0 spent)
The next NP will be received at the end of turn 8.

New factions start off with 18 Noble Points.  These points allow you to create more nobles, but are also used to study Magic schools, as well as Beastmastery.  Every 8 turns, an extra noble point is handed out to every player.

Note that if you're joining the game much later than turn 1, you will get some catch-up noble points on your initial turn.  Basically, everyone should have an equal amount of noble points at any time.

The next five nobles formed will be: 1896 3794 9040 5261 6679

200 fast study days are left.

Fast study points are very useful.  In normal circumstances, nobles may only study 2 weeks per month (one month is equal to one turn).  However, if fast study points are being used, this limitation can be circumvented.  In fact, while study normally takes place in chunks of one week each, fast studying takes no time at all!

Take care, however, that fast study points come in very limited supply, so think before you spend them.

House of Atreides [hu7]
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unclaimed items:

      qty name weight
      --- ---- ------
    5,000 gold [1] 0
        5 riding horses [52] 5,000 ride 750
       50 wood [77] 1,500
      100 stone [78] 10,000

Similar to fast study days, every faction is given a cache of free supplies.  Think of this as your Welcome-to-Olympia Starter Kit.  These supplies are described as "Unclaimed items" as you need to "claim" them to retrieve them from your cache.  These supplies allow a faction to get on its feet quickly, without having to go through the effort of gathering them.

As with fast study points, however, they come in very limited supply.  So once again, think before you spend.

Paul Atreides [7108]

   Break point: 50%

Meet Paul Atreides.  He is the initial noble for House of Atreides.  As you can see there is quite a bit of information about him in the turn report.  Apart from his location and health, you can also find some combat values.  I won't go into them right now, but you can read more about them in the rules.

Let me mention a very important thing about Paul Atreides: his loyalty.  This is a very important bit of information.  Paul is an Oath-2 noble, sometimes referred to as O2.  This means that he has sworn loyalty to you, and will never leave you.
There is also such a thing as Oath-1 (O1) loyalty, which is basically the same thing, but slightly less effective.  In fact, an O2 noble will never leave you, while an O1 noble has a chance to renounce his loyalty to you in case he gets bribed.

Now don't panic straight away, bribing nobles is a very uncommon occurrance, and not something to worry about on your first few turns.  However, oathing a noble does give you another useful benefit: you don't need to pay him.

But enough about loyalty for now, let's discuss the rest of Paul next:

Aparently, Paul starts out with no skills.  Not to worry, we will soon fix that.

He does have some stuff on him though, 200 gold and 25 peasants.  Gold is the main currency in Olympia.  It is used to buy practically everything.  Notice the number next to "gold" between square brackets: 1.  This is the game's code that represents gold.  After we're done reading this report, we're going to start writing some orders and whenever we refer to gold, we will use the number instead of "gold".  Similarly, if you scroll back a bit, Paul also has a code assigned to him.  Every noble, faction and item does in fact.

Peasants are the basic unit type in Olympia.  All troops that can be trained by your nobles will start off as peasants.  They can then be trained to become soldiers, so you can fight with them, or even into more advanced military troops such as swordsmen, knights, archers, etc...

It is windy.

Next up are the location reports.
The whole of Olympia is built up out of provinces.  Think of the map as a grid of 100 squares across and 100 squares down, filled with oceans, plains, forests, mountains, swamps and deserts.  Each one of those squares is a province, and one of those provinces is described here: Forest.

Granted, not a very original name.  Anyway, you will notice the mention of "safe haven".  This means there is no combat or magic allowed in this province.  There are only a handful of safe havens in all of Olympia, and every new faction starts in one of them.

Further information provided are the routes leaving this province, this gives you an indication which way to go if you're looking to explore Olympia.

Lastly, an inner location "Yellowleaf" is mentioned, which is also a safe haven.
Since our noble is actually standing inside Yellowleaf, we'll get more information on that city in a moment.  So let's read on:

Wow, a whole bunch of information there!  Let's take a look at it:

Yellowleaf seems to have several routes leaving it.  Usually cities only have one exit: "out".  However, since Yellowleaf is a port city, there are also exits toward the ocean, in case you build a boat and set sail.

Every city always provides a list of cities rumored to be nearby.  This is usually a very good way to get started if you plan on exploring Olympia a bit.  Cities are an important part of Olympia, and getting to know where they are around you is very important.

Next up are the skills taught in the city: every city will teach several skills.  Port cities will always provide Shipcraft, plain cities will teach Beastmastery, mountain cities will teach mining and forest cities will teach forestry.  Apart from those, there are several skills that every city teaches, such as combat, Stealth and Construction.  Magic works in a similar way.  Scout around for the cities rumored to be nearby and you will soon know where to find practically every skill that can be studied.

The market report shows some interesting information.  First off, the city seems to be selling pitch and wood.  Wood is used to construct galleys and roundships, as well as certain building types, but also a range of weapons you can use to train advanced combat troops;  Pitch is less versatile and is used only to repair damaged ships.  The city buys fish and woven baskets.  To get fish, you will need a boat and the fishing skill, but woven baskets can be made by everyone.  More on that later.

Finally, there's a list of people in the city.  Right now, Paul is a bit lonely, as he's all alone.  Usually though, you will see several names in that list.  Especially in the starting cities.

Last, but not least, the order template.

The order template is very useful.  It provides you with a starting point to write your orders.  We'll be taking this along to the next section where we write our first orders!

See you there!

First Orders!

Remember this?

begin hu7 # House of Atreides

unit hu7 # House of Atreides

unit 7108 # Paul Atreides in Yellowleaf [r52]

end

This was the Initial Position Reports Order Template.  Let's use this to write some orders:

begin hu7 # House of Atreides

unit hu7 # House of Atreides
  password "AtreidesRulez!!"

First thing everyone should do is set a password for your faction.  This will make sure only you can submit orders for your faction in the future.  Do this immediately.  Though submitting orders for other factions is against the rules, there's no need to be reckless.

unit 7108 # Paul Atreides in Yellowleaf [r52]
  form 1896 "Lady Jessica" # days 1 to 7
  form 9040 "Leto Atreides" # days 8 to 14

First things first: let's form two new nobles.  This can be done with the "form" order.
If you look at your Initial Position Report, you may have noticed a range of 5 codes, described as "The next five nobles formed will be:".  Those codes are the ones you need to use when forming new nobles.  If you look at the form orders above, you will see that two of those codes have been used to form Lady Jessica and Leto Atreides.
Forming a noble takes seven days, and every turn (or month) consists of 30 days.  So there are 30 days of orders to fill up per turn, for every noble.  Forming two new nobles, takes Paul Atreides 14 of those 30 days.  He thus has 16 days left to do things.

Note: no doubt you have noticed the # after the orders, with a little text behind it mentioning the duration it takes to execute the order.  This is known as a comment.  In fact, the game will ignore anything written after a # character on the same line.  They are purely optional, and I only added them to illustrate how long the orders would take.

study 700 # days 15 to 21
study 700 # days 22 to 28

He will follow up those form orders with two study orders, each of them also taking one week to complete.  This brings our total up to 28 days spent.
Notice the number used for the study order.  This code represents the Forestry skill.  This is the base skill for a range of other sub-skills, all of which are related to Forestry, such as Harvest Lumber, Harvest Yew, etc... In order to start learning this skill, Paul must be in a city which teaches it (if you look back to the skills taught in Yellowleaf from the Initial Position Report, you will notice Forestry being one of them).  He also must have 100 gold to start his studies.

Remember this: The study of a base skill (Forestry, Combat, Magic) must always be started in a city that teaches it, but any of the subskills can be studied anywhere.  So once Forestry is fully studied, Paul will be able to start studying Harvest Lumber from anywhere in Olympia.

press 0
The House of Atreides claims the entire territory
surrounding the Safe Haven of Yellowleaf!
end

The Olympia Times is published once a week and contains player submitted press and rumor entries.  The Times can be a valuable source of information, so make sure to read it every week!

To submit Paul's claim to the area around Yellowleaf, he submits a press item to the times, using the "press" order.  Check it out in the rules if you want to learn more about it.

train 11 10 # 2 days left

Paul has 2 days left to fill up to complete this turn's orders.  He will be using some of the peasants he has and train them into workers (code: 11).  Workers can be used for lots of tasks, such as collect wood using the Collect Lumber skill, or build structures using the Construction skill.

Training one worker takes Paul one day, so with 2 days left, he will end up with 2 workers by the end of day 30.

end

Finish your orders with the "end" keyword.  This indicates to the Olympia order scanner that you're done giving your faction orders.

Well, it looks like we're done here.

But wait, what about those two nobles Paul just formed.  Can't we give them orders this turn?

In fact, yes we can.

All we need to do is issue the "unit" order and include the noble ID we used to form him, and we can give this noble orders immediately!

Take a look at how it's done:

unit 1896 # comes into existence on day 7
  banner "Bene Gesserit"
  unstack
  claim 1 100
  study 800 # days 8 to 14
  study 800 # days 15 to 21
  get 7108 10 9
  train 11 9 # days 22 to 30+

There you go!

So, more nobles means more stuff that gets done.  Apart from the train and the study orders, there are a few new orders as well.

- "banner" allows a noble to carry around a banner with a message.

- "claim" allows you to get some of that cache of "unclaimed items" we talked about in the Initial Position Report article.  "claim 1 100" claims 100 gold (remember the code for gold was 1?)

- "unstack" causes the noble to unstack from Paul Atreides.  Stacks can be considered to be groups of nobles who move together.  If one noble is stacked with another, they will move in and out of cities together, they will move toward adjoining provinces together, and they will also fight together if attacked (or attacking).  Newly formed nobles start out stacked under the noble that formed them, so to give this new noble some independence, he can issue the "unstack" order.  This breaks him away from the group.

- "get" allows a noble to take stuff from other nobles.  Take a look at the rules for an explanation of what parameters to use.  Important to remember is that you can "get" or "take" anything from any other noble in your own faction, but not from other factions.

Now, let's also add some orders for our second new noble:

unit 9040
banner "Rules of the House of Atreides"
  oath 1
  claim 1 100
  study 680
  study 680
  explore
  explore
  explore
  explore

There are two new order types here: "oath" and "explore".

- "oath": remember our Initial Position Report, where Paul Atreides had a loyalty of Oath-2? This command allows us to change the loyalty of our new noble straight away to Oath-1.  This is an important noble, as he rules the House of Atreides, so I want to oath him straight away.  I might even consider raising his oath to level 2.

- "explore" does exactly what it implies.  This makes the noble explore the location he is currently in, in this case the city of Yellowleaf.  There are hidden locations all over Olympia, even inside cities.  So issuing a few explores are never a waste.

That's all the orders done, let's put them all together, for easy reference:

begin hu7 # House of Atreides

unit hu7 # House of Atreides
  password "AtreidesRulez!!"

unit 7108 # Paul Atreides in Yellowleaf [r52]
  form 1896 "Lady Jessica" # days 1 to 7
  form 9040 "Leto Atreides" # days 8 to 14
  study 700 # days 15 to 21
  study 700 # days 22 to 28
  press 0

end

After copy-pasting these orders into an e-mail and sending them to g3@olympia.v-labs.be, an order acknowledgement should arrive within a few minutes.  This tells us of any syntax errors we may have made.  Be aware that it will not check your orders for logical errors.  If a noble attempts to start new  studies without having 100 gold starting capital, the order scanner will not pick up on this.  That's for you to figure out!

Next up, we'll look at turn 2 and see what our nobles did!

Turn 2 Report

It looks like Turn 2's report is a bit longer than our Initial Position Report.

Give it a read-through, and let's meet up in the next section for a break-down.

Here's something new: This is a little score board showing you how far your faction has progressed compared to the rest of the player base.  In this tutorial, House of Atreides is the only faction, so naturally wins in every category.  Yay!

Noble points: 14 (0 gained, 4 spent)
The next NP will be received at the end of turn 8.

It looks like we spent 4 noble points.  If you remember, we formed 2 nobles, oathed one of them to Oath-1 and studied Magic.  This should add up to 4.  It looks like those orders succeeded then.  In any case, we'll get final confirmation when we check out these nobles themselves.

The next five nobles formed will be: 3794 5261 6679 4478 8425

Here we can see the orders as they were given (preceeded by >) and the result.  It looks like Paul successfully formed 2 nobles and studied Forestry [700] for two weeks.  His press post was a success, and he trained some workers until the end of the turn.  Well done, Paul!

Where it said "none" in our Initial Position Report, Paul now shows a partial knowledge of the skill Forestry [700].  He has studied 14 out of a total of 21 days (2 out of 3 weeks) to know the skill.  Right now, he does not know the skill, only partially.  Therefore, he cannot start studying one of the subskills (such as Collect Lumber [702]) until he finishes the base skill of Forestry [700].

As you can see, Leto only starts processing his orders from day 14 onward.  He was the second noble Paul formed, so he only came into existence on day 14.
Looks like he successfully studied two weeks of Construction [680], increased his loyalty to Oath-1 and set his banner.  He also spent one day exploring the city of Yellowleaf, although that order will only show results until the 7-day explore is finished, meaning we won't get a result until next turn.

30: Trained nine workers.
30: Maintenance costs are 18 gold, can afford 0 gold.
30: Three workers left service.

It looks like something did go wrong after all.  And let me reassure you, at some point in the future, stuff will go wrong.  In this case, Lady Jessica had enough money to start her studies of Magic [800], but she had no gold left over to pay for the workers she was training.

The result was that some of them up and left, because they were not being paid.  Not a terrible setback, but one that could have been avoided.

This seems like a perfect time to explain men and their upkeep cost.  Whenever you own peasants, workers, sailors, soldiers or any of the other troop types, they will need to be paid at the end of the turn.  It doesn't matter if they've been with you since day 1 or day 29, they will all need a fixed salary.  If you don't have the money to pay them, some of them will leave.

The cost of men can be found in the rules, so I would advise you to go take a look.  However, there's a very simple rule to figuring out their maintenance cost.  Peasants cost 1 gold per turn, every additional training step adds 1 gold to that maintenance cost.  So, for example, if you train a peasant to be a worker, his cost will go up from 1 gold to 2 gold per turn.  A soldier will also cost 2 gold per turn, because he is trained from a peasant.  A pikeman is the result of training a soldier to use a pike, which adds another training level and thus another 1 gold, resulting in a maintenance cost of 3 gold per turn.

What follows below are lore sheets of the new skills that were studied this turn. Every time one of your nobles starts to study a skill your faction has not learned before, you will get a lore sheet about it with some information. This information can also be found in the online rules.
Lore sheets
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Construction [680]
------------------
The domain of engineers, builders and architects, Construction
concerns the erection of inns, castles, city walls, and other
fortifications.

The following skills may be studied directly once Construction is known:

Forestry [700]
--------------
Forestry is skill at managing forests and harvesting their
products, such as timber, yew, and rare foliage.

Magic [800]
-----------
No apprentice magician can rightfully don the robes of his order without
some knowledge of Magic [800]. Magic contains many spells useful on
their own, as well as in conjunction with spells from the other schools
of sorcery.

The following skills may be studied directly once Magic is known:

And finally, we have our new Order Template.  Notice that this time, any orders that a noble is still executing, are being added as a comment.

Any orders that were issued for the noble, but never got around to will be added as queued orders.  You may continue with them, or delete them and write new ones as you see fit.  We will see how this is done in the next section, when we write orders for the next turn!

Orders for Turn 3

Let's skip the pleasantries and get straight to order making:

begin hu7 "AtreidesRulez!!" # House of Atreides

Remember how we changed our faction's password last turn? The order template automatically included it in our new orders.  How handy!

unit hu7 # House of Atreides

unit 7108 # Paul Atreides in Yellowleaf [r52]
   # > train 11 10 (still executing)
  stop

Looks like Paul is still busy training workers.  He started on day 29 of turn 2 and will continue doing so until 10 workers have been trained, unless we stop him.  Any orders currently being executed, can be stopped by issuing the "stop" order.  Take care, this has to be the very first order we issue, or it will not work.

study 700 7

Let's kick things up a notch and get some fast study days in there.  We're spending 7 fast study days to accellerate the learning of Forestry [700].  Remember from our Turn 2 Report, that Paul had 14 out of 21 days studied, so he only needs 7 more days (1 week) to finish.

claim 1 50
study 702 14

While we're at it, let's accellerate the learning of Harvest Lumber [702] as well.  We had to claim a bit extra gold because Paul only had 82 gold at the start of the turn, and 100 gold is needed to start studying any new skill.

train 11 7
get 1896 11 0
give 9040 11 0

We're going to have Leto build a tower this turn.  Towers are useful for researching skills in.  If you browse through the skills in the online rules, you will notice that not all subskills are immediately available once we learn the base skill.  Some of the more interesting and advanced subskills only become available after research.  And anyone knows all research is performed in a tower!

Paul is going to help Leto out a little by training some more workers, collecting them from Lady Jessica (who will also train some workers as you'll see) and then finally handing them all over to Leto.  Leto can then use these workers to build a tower.

out
recruit 1
train 11 8

First, Paul moves out of the city into the Forest province.  In the province, a few more options become available to him.  Since it's a forest province, he will be able to use his newly learned Harvest Lumber [702] skill to collect wood, for example.  First though, he will need a few more workers.

If we counted accurately, he should have 7 peasants left.  Since there is 30 wood to be collected from a forest province per month (turn), this would take him 5 days with 7 workers.  However, if we recruit and train one extra worker, it will only take him 4 days.  It actually takes him longer to collect 30 wood this turn, but it will pay off in the long run.

wood 30
recruit

As the lore sheet (and the online rules) mentions, collecting wood by using the skill Harvest Lumber [702] can be done by issuing the "wood" order.  A maximum of 30 wood can be collected like this in a forest province, however you are free to collect less than 30 if you want.

After that, Paul is going to recruit some more peasants to his cause by issuing the "recruit" order.

unit 9040 # Leto Atreides in Yellowleaf [r52]
   # > explore (executing for six more days)
  stop

While exploration certainly is useful, we have more important things for Leto to take care of now.  Let's make him interrupt his exploration by using the "stop" order.

study 680
wait item 11 3

"wait" is an extremely useful order.  After finishing his studies in Construction [680], Leto is pretty much ready to start building a tower.  However, he will need workers (at least 3) to start construction.  Since Paul is training these workers for him, he will need to issue a wait order to make sure he doesn't start building until he actually has the workers.  "wait item" will allow him to wait until he has a certain item in his possession (a worker is an item for this purpose), and the additional parameters specify he's  waiting for at least 3 workers.

For a full list of possible wait orders, check it out in the Online Rules.

claim 78 100
claim 1 50
build tower "Tower of House Atreides"

After claiming 100 stone and some gold to pay for the workers Paul is giving him, Leto can finally start working on building a tower.  Towers take a lot of effort to build, so it will take him more than this turn to finish.

unit 1896 # Lady Jessica in Yellowleaf [r52]
  study 800
  study 800
  sell 94 9999 4
  make 94 30

Jessica is well on her way of becoming a powerful mage.  Two weeks of study should finish up Magic [800] nicely.  She will need to study a lot more magic skills however.  At 100 gold per subskill, this will start eating away our claim gold fast.

Let's make her earn some extra money and try to save our claim gold for when times are tough.

First, she issues a "sell" order.  If you look back to last turn report, the city of Yellowleaf buys Woven Baskets for 4 gold each, up to a total of 15 woven baskets per month.  This is a potential of 60 gold per turn.  That's not bad.  But why, I hear you ask, is she issuing the "sell" order before actually having made any woven baskets?

Glad you asked.

"sell" and "buy" orders get queued.  This means that if you have, for instance, 5 woven baskets, and try to sell 10 of them, you will actually sell the 5 baskets you have and add another 5 baskets to your queued sell list.  If you then make 5 more baskets, they will be sold as soon as you make them, one by one.  So instead of first making baskets and then selling them, we can tell the game in advance that we're going to be selling woven baskets ahead of time.

This may seem confusing right now, but it will all become very clear when you see the next turn report.

end

Right! We're done for now. Let's skip ahead and see what the next turn has to report!

If you check out Lady Jessica's Pending Trades below, you will see that of the 9,999 woven baskets she is selling, 15 have been sold.  This pending trade will stay with her, until she cancels it like so: "sell 94 0".

 8: > wait item 11 3
 8: Received 15 workers [11] from Paul Atreides [7108].
8: Wait finished: Leto Atreides has 15 workers.

It looks like our timing was perfect.  Leto expected to receive workers from Paul on day 8, and actually got them that very day.  The wait order turned out to be unnecessary.  However, it's sometimes a good idea to build these kinds of safety nets into your orders, just in case stuff goes wrong somewhere.

Suppose Paul was just one day late delivering the workers to Leto, and Leto had not issued a wait order, then he would have tried to build a tower without any workers.  The rest of his turn would have been completely wasted.

8: > build tower "Tower of House Atreides"
8: Created Tower of House Atreides [4499], tower-in-progress.

Here we go, one tower coming up.  It's a good thing we claimed some gold too, or some of the workers would not have gotten paid at the end of the turn.
